Dr Chongpongmeren

Assistant Professor of History of Christianity
 

Dr Chongpongmeren (Meren) Jamir, a SAIACS alumnus (MTh, History of Christianity), joined the institute as faculty in training in 2013 and now serves as Assistant Professor of History of Christianity in SAIACS. He also serves as the Specialization Advisor for History in the Department of Theology and History. His area of specialization is cultural history with particular interest in cultural symbols and representations, a pioneering contribution in historiographical discussion in India. In this area, he has given lectures on invitation at various platforms including the Arulappa Endowment Lecture, Department of Christian Studies, University of Madras.
 

He maintains a keen interest on the history of Christianity in India, particularly on the historical development of Christian spirituality and piety. His current research interest is on the semantic study of early Christianity, and is working on a project on cultural history of the Patristic period. He is also involved in the IMC Centenary Study Process of the World Council of Churches as co-editor of the India chapter, the research findings of which will be published by WCC-Regnum, Oxford. In addition to his book Christianity in Northeast India: A Cultural History of Nagaland from 1947 (Routledge, 2020), he has authored several articles including “Naga Churches, Society and Mission” (Witnessing to Christ in North-East India, 2016) and “Peripheral Foci: Dynamics of Power in Naga Society” (Through the Ages, 2021).

Meren is a sports enthusiast and loves playing football and cricket. He also likes cooking and tries his hand at various cuisines. He is married to Viva, who is a musician, and they have a daughter named Ochiten.
